Email is still the marketing channel you own outright. No algorithm decides who sees your message, and every dollar you put into your list keeps paying you back. But inboxes are crowded, and the old approach of blasting one newsletter to everyone no longer works. Here are three strategies that do.
1. Segment and personalize every send
A first-time subscriber, a loyal repeat customer, and someone who hasn't opened in six months don't want the same email. Split your list by what people have done (purchases, pages viewed, emails opened) and by what they've told you (interests, location, role). Then write to each group as if it were one person.
Personalization goes well beyond a first name in the subject line. Recommend products related to what someone bought, reference the service they asked about, and send at the time of day they usually open. Segmented campaigns consistently earn higher open and click rates because each message feels relevant.
2. Automate the moments that matter
The highest-performing emails are usually the ones nobody has to remember to send. Build automated flows for the moments in the customer journey that predictably lead to revenue:
- A welcome series that introduces your brand and makes a first offer
- Abandoned cart and browse reminders
- Post-purchase thank-yous, how-to content, and review requests
- Win-back messages for customers who have gone quiet
Set these up once, review them each quarter, and they work around the clock. Marketing automation also keeps your timing consistent, which builds trust with subscribers.
3. Test, measure, and protect deliverability
Small changes compound. A/B test one variable at a time (subject lines, send times, calls to action, or layout) and keep what wins. Track the numbers that tie to revenue, like click-through rate, conversion rate, and revenue per email, rather than opens alone.
None of it matters if your emails land in spam. Authenticate your sending domain with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, remove addresses that bounce or never engage, and make unsubscribing easy. A smaller, engaged list beats a large, disinterested one every time.
